We can also see why the Trinity is the highest mystery, for it points beyond all other revealed truths, which only tell us what God has done (e.g., creation, redemption, sanctification). In fact, only the dogma of the Trinity discloses the all-surpassing mystery of God’s essential identity, that is, who He is—in Himself, from all eternity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Perhaps nobody has stated this awesome mystery more simply and clearly and profoundly than Pope John Paul II: “God in His deepest
